You are not your thoughts
Have you ever noticed that you can observe your thoughts?
Not just think – but notice that you are thinking. Take a step back and watch thoughts come and go again. Like clouds in the sky.
This is not a trick. It is one of the deepest insights you can have.
What keeps changing
Your thoughts are constantly changing. In the morning, you think about the day; in the evening, about what has happened. What occupied you yesterday may be forgotten today. What excites you today may be unimportant tomorrow.
It is the same with feelings. Joy, worry, ease, heaviness – they pass through you like weather. No feeling stays forever.
And your body? It changes too. The body you had when you were five is different from the one you have today. Much of it is continually renewing itself.
What remains?
Amid all this change, there is something that does not change. Something that was already there when you were a child. That was there when you were sad. That was there when you were happy.
It is what observes.
Not the thoughts themselves – but what perceives them. Not the feelings – but that in which they appear. Still. Clear.
In Advaita Vedanta, this is called the witness, or the Self – the unchanging core, beyond thoughts, emotions and bodily sensations. I believe this to be true; I cannot prove it to you.
A small experiment
Sit quietly for a moment. Close your eyes. Observe what comes – thoughts, images, sounds, sensations.
And then ask yourself: Who is observing all this?
See whether you can find an answer that can be expressed in thought. For me, thinking stops at this point – and that is precisely the part I find interesting.
Why this is liberating
If you are not your thoughts, then you are not what they tell you either. You are not the self-doubt. Not the worries. Not the inner voice that says you are not good enough.
All of these are clouds. You are the sky.
This does not mean that thoughts and feelings are unimportant. They are part of life. But you do not have to believe them. You do not have to mistake them for yourself.
The beginning of a quiet journey
This insight is not a goal you reach once and then possess. It deepens over time. Through meditation. Through self-observation. Through still moments in everyday life.
And at some point, perhaps you notice something that was never restless. That never suffered. That was always free.
It is not waiting for you. It is already there.
